When Will Sagrada Familia Be Finished?

Construction of the Sagrada Familia, Antoni Gaudí’s iconic basilica, began in 1882 and is projected to be completed in 2026, marking the centenary of Gaudí’s death. Delays due to funding, wars, and Gaudí’s complex designs have extended the timeline, but recent progress, aided by modern technology, is bringing this masterpiece closer to completion. Our Barcelona tours, like the Sagrada Familia and Hospital de Sant Pau Tour, offer skip-the-line access and expert insights into its ongoing creation.

What Is La Sagrada Familia?

La Sagrada Familia is a UNESCO-listed basilica in Barcelona, designed by Antoni Gaudí, blending Gothic and Art Nouveau styles. More than a church, it’s a symbol of Barcelona’s creativity, with intricate facades depicting biblical stories and a soaring interior inspired by nature. Still under construction, it’s one of the world’s most ambitious architectural projects. Our Barcelona guided tours with art historians unpack its symbolism and Gaudí’s vision, making it a must-see landmark.

Esther was amazing. She was informative and knew everything about tapas. She asked what kind of tapas we liked at each of our three stops before we ordered, so we got a taste of everything and ate everything we enjoyed. She provided extra information about other areas of Barcelona we should visit and good restaurants to eat in during our stay. She advised us of the best chocolate stores in the area when she found out my husband loved chocolate. She was a joy to work with. I would definitely recommend Esther and context travel for a tapas tour during your stay in Barcelona!
Alex did an outstanding job of not only showing us outstanding examples of Barcelona modernism houses, by the three most outstanding architects and a fourth as well, but pointing out features we would never have seen on our own. All explanations put the period into context. Alex facilitated our trip to Casa Battlo by arranging the elevator for these two old guests. The Basilca Sagrada Familgia was outstanding but more so with Alex’s explanation of the organization of the beautiful facades. There was so much to see but he focused our observations so that we came away with beautiful memories. Even though the day was long AND hot, we were so happy to have seen Park Guell. The beautiful trees and the square with fabulous benches and surprise beneath are not to be missed. Thank you Alex for a very special day.

Biel exceeded our expectations for the “Introduction to Barcelona Tour: Gothic Quarter.” As first-time visitors, we were impressed by his art history background, which went far beyond technical details to explore the social and cultural impacts on both Spain and Catalonia. He brilliantly contextualized the Gothic architecture within broader historical movements and their lasting effects on Catalan identity. When my wife expressed interest in urban planning prior to the tour, Biel came prepared with fascinating insights into Barcelona’s unique block design and city layout. His ability to seamlessly weave together art history, urban development, and cultural analysis made this much more than a typical walking tour. Biel’s scholarly approach combined with his personable delivery created the perfect introduction to Barcelona’s complex layers of history and identity. Highly recommended for travelers seeking intellectual depth alongside excellent guiding.
