Tour Description
Are you ready to discover more about the greatest exponent of Catalan Modernism? This journey will reveal Gaudi's talent and what lies behind his majestic works.
We’ll begin by looking at the history of Barcelona and the growth of the city, exploring the work of urban planner Ildefons Cerda, whose 1859 “enlargement” laid out the modern city. With this architectural context as a backdrop, you will make your way through the heart of Barcelona to see two of Gaudí's masterpieces: the Casa Milà (also known as La Pedrera), where we’ll explore its fantastical exterior, and the Casa Batlló, on the Block of Discord, where we’ll spend time on its roof and the apartment inside.

During the Gaudí tour, you will also look at the works of some of this architect's followers and rivals, including buildings by Puig i Cadafalch and Domènech i Montaner. You will discuss these Modernista architects’ influence on Gaudí and how they wove their unique points of view and inspirations into their finished designs.
By the end, you will have insight into Barcelona’s aesthetic evolution and what led Gaudí to construct incredible buildings that fight against the modern grid deliberately.

Guide was very knowledgeable, but inexperieinced. It took her a while to get comfortable. Overall, very good.

Santi was terrific. He was enthusiastic about the subject matter and was happy to share his rather extensive knowledge. He was engaging and eager to answer our questions. I particularly appreciated the time he took to set the stage historically for Gaudi before we got started. We didn't know that much about Catalonian history and learning about that and Barcelona specifically really helped us to understand "why Gaudi". We also appreciated Santi taking us to places that weren't the usual tourist map. It was nice to have these spots to ourselves for the most part and clear from the reception he received in the buildings that he was respectful and respected. I should also point out that he took extra time with us at the end to make sure we "saw" everything on our last stop. We couldn't have asked for better. Many thanks again to him and kudos to Context for hiring someone of his caliber.
Secondly - thank you very much for the advance materials on Gaudi - very helpful. And many thanks for restaurant suggestions in the those materials. We dined at two of the places on the list - both terrific and neither overrun with tourists.
Last - a small "suggestion" - we got a late start (only a few minutes and no big deal) due to a miscommunication on where to meet Santi. In the e-mail we were advised to wait in the lobby - it was his understanding that he was to meet us out front of the hotel. As I said - no big deal - especially as he took extra time with us afterwards. But it would have been better had everyone not been anxiously waiting for each other in different places!

The content and structure of the tour was exceptional. The friendliness of the tour guide was extraordinarily exceptional (Sonia actually spent 45 mins more on the tour and then proceeded to walk us through the Bari Gotic neighborhood to show us directions to the Bocqueria. We were very impressed).
Sonia could improve on some areas. she can talk a little louder so that everyone can hear her clearly and she could also be conscious of making everyone feel included in the tour at all times.
Overall we were very happy with the tour and would recommend this to our friends.
