Tour Description
Are you ready to discover more about the greatest exponent of Catalan Modernism? This journey will reveal Gaudi's talent and what lies behind his majestic works.
We’ll begin by looking at the history of Barcelona and the growth of the city, exploring the work of urban planner Ildefons Cerda, whose 1859 “enlargement” laid out the modern city. With this architectural context as a backdrop, you will make your way through the heart of Barcelona to see two of Gaudí's masterpieces: the Casa Milà (also known as La Pedrera), where we’ll explore its fantastical exterior, and the Casa Batlló, on the Block of Discord, where we’ll spend time on its roof and the apartment inside.

During the Gaudí tour, you will also look at the works of some of this architect's followers and rivals, including buildings by Puig i Cadafalch and Domènech i Montaner. You will discuss these Modernista architects’ influence on Gaudí and how they wove their unique points of view and inspirations into their finished designs.
By the end, you will have insight into Barcelona’s aesthetic evolution and what led Gaudí to construct incredible buildings that fight against the modern grid deliberately.

Context Travel offers both Private and Small Group Tours. Private tours are booked between your party and a local expert, where you'll be given a private tour of the venue. We all thought Bernat was wonderful and I have recommended him to other friends who are going to be in Barcelona. What we learned from him really carried over to other buildings such as the Palau de la Musica when we saw them. I really can't say enough good things about him - charming manner, excellent English, and so knowledgable.

We had a little trouble finding the hotel, because the hotel's signage was not obvious. We approached it from the opposite side of the street, and when you cross the street, you are already past the hotel's signage. When we tried to call the local Spain Team number to have them alert the guide and help us, we got a recording. Rather aggravated about that, because we were actually on time. Need to give folks the cell phone number of the guide. We did finally realize we were at the right place and fortunately Bernat had not left yet - although we felt bad that the other folks on the trip had to hear some of his talk again so that he could get us up to speed.

It all worked wonderfully. Biel was not only very knowledgeable but very passionate and high energy. He gave lots of information and background to the city, history, culture, politics as well as the architecture. He was great with all of our questions. We were exhausted when we finished - and it was a bit hot and sticky. We would do it all again also. We were jet lagged too - it was our first day in Barcelona.
Every tour we have taken with you folks, in every city, has been exceptional. Will continue to look for you in any city we are visiting.
