Giulia Pesa

Lecturer/Local Guide in Kyoto
About Giulia

Giulia’s fascination with Japan was ignited by a love for exploring new places and meeting cultures different from her own. Her adventurous spirit has taken her across many countries and into distant worlds through books, eventually leading her to major in Japanese, English, and Portuguese—a journey that brought her to Kyoto in 2014.

Her first stay was shaped by the Urasenke Tea Ceremony and the profound Zen concept of 「一期一会」 “Every encounter is unique.” This philosophy guides her tours, inspiring her to craft experiences where each step becomes a memorable moment as visitors discover both quiet wonders and celebrated gems of Kyoto.
Her expertise spans Japanese history, culture, and traditions, with a particular fascination for the minorities and indigenous communities of Japan, often overlooked like hidden gems.

While teaching at University, Giulia earned a Masters Degree in International Relations, and is now pursuing a PhD on Ryukyuan heritage in the digital era.
She engages with history not as something frozen in museums, but as a living presence whose traces still resonate today, helping visitors experience the past as vibrant, meaningful, and connected to the present.
