Tour Description
Venice's Cannaregio neighborhood remains a respite away from the crowds of St. Mark's and is home to much of Venice's resident population. Largely avoided by tourists, this charming neighborhood provides an excellent opportunity to experience the magic of Venice without jostling for breath with large groups. During this three-hour Cannaregio tour, we'll spend equal time looking at art, architecture, and local character, providing you with an insider's sense of both modern and historical Venice.
Experts
A truly varied walk, this is the perfect choice for those looking to mix art, history, and lifestyle. Local bars, artisan shops, and small grocery stores remain intertwined with baroque facades and Tintoretto-decorated churches, giving Cannaregio a unique flavor. While the sites and route vary according to the group's and guide's interests, the tour may discuss the Gesuiti, Madonna dell'Orto, and Sant'Alvise churches, as well as the artistic heritage of the district, kept alive today through artisan shops and artists' studios.
Does this tour include the Jewish Ghetto?
While this walk may or may not touch on some aspects of the Jewish Ghetto, it is not a walk specifically focused on Jewish Venice. For this type of walk, which includes a visit to the Synagogue, please take a look at our Jewish Ghetto tour. Looking to see Venice's major sites? Try our Venice City Tour of St. Mark's and Rialto.
Will we have time for shopping on the tour?
The goal of this tour is the provide participants with an overview of the neighborhood, its history and current life. We may pop into a few shops; however, you may prefer to return to these after the tour so you have more time to shop at your leisure.

The only thing that didn't work was the weather!

The neighborhood was interesting and I like the fact that it started and ended with two different style churches. The visit to the glass blowing studio was a highlight as we were lucky enough to receive a demonstration. The docent was knowledgable but his continual checking of his cell phone annoyed me. Also, the other participants in the group had hired a private guide (not through Context) for a general orientation to Venice earlier in the week but in spite of that experience asked a basic question of the docent about Venice was formed in the lagoon. Our docent answered their question but made it clear that their other guide should have covered that information and that what they asked was not part of the planned tour. It bothered me to hear him openly criticize another guide. It wasn't a complicated question and it seems to me as if he should have just answered the question graciously.

Erika was fantastic. We travel quite a bit and over the years have acquired knowledge of history, art, architecture,
and she added to what we already knew. She was warm and genuinely (sic) friendly. We would recommend her again to future clients. Vernon Fairchild ( please forgive typo mistakes--just returned home from a long trip and very tired.)
