Tour Description
Venice's Cannaregio neighborhood remains a respite away from the crowds of St. Mark's and home to much of Venice's resident population. Largely avoided by tourists, this charming neighborhood provides an excellent opportunity to experience the magic of Venice without jostling for breath with large groups. During this three-hour Cannaregio tour, we'll spend equal time looking at art, architecture, and local character, providing you with an insider's sense of both modern and historical Venice.

A truly varied walk, this is the perfect choice for those looking to mix art, history, and lifestyle. Local bars, artisan shops, and small grocery stores remain intertwined with baroque facades and Tintoretto-decorated churches, giving Cannaregio a unique flavor. While the sites and route vary according to the group's and guide's interests, the tour may discuss the Gesuiti, Madonna dell'Orto, and Sant'Alvise churches, as well as the artistic heritage of the district, kept alive today through artisan shops and artists studios.

Was great to experience life in the neighbourhood. Would have liked to have more of a contrast between life today and what life would have been like in the day. Some of this was done but would have liked more of this story telling and picture painting.

This was *exactly* the walk we wanted with the perfect docent to lead us. I had never been to Venice, but my wife had and I think her previous experience was that Venice felt like a theme park that was over run by tourists. We both love history, I worked as an urban historian, and it was perfect to get an in-depth view of a corner of Venice where Venetians lived and went about their lives. It was a grounding experience for when we did see things like St. Marks or the Doges Palace that felt touristy. And the walk provided a perfect base of knowledge for when we were out with the rest of the family. I purchased a mask I love from the shop Louisa took us to, plus a belt from the leather shop that the owner custom made while I waited. We had dinner at the restaurant near the F. Nove stop on our last night as a family and it was a huge hit. My mother in law went back more than once to the bead shop and kissed the owner goodbye on the day we left.
Louisa was a great docent. We had a particular list of interests, shops and parameters for her to navigate (we were scouts for the whole family, and several were elderly and not quite as mobile). I don't know that given these parameters that we saw all the very best highlights in Cannaregio, but we saw exactly what worked for us. Louisa was great at finding all sorts of interesting places and hidden details within the confines of the neighborhood. We loved that she had personal connections with the caretaker of the Jesuit Church, knew shop owners, and new people passing in the street. It really made the walk feel personal and welcoming. And we greatly appreciated her knowledge, from art and architectural details to comments on living in Venice and tips on personal interactions. Venice has such a wide-ranging history that can feel overwhelming, but she helped us get feel like we "got" it... at least in a small way, in a small corner of town.

Our guide Matteo Gabbrielli was extremely knowledgeable about the neighborhood and responsive to our specific interests. My husband and I felt like a good friend was giving us an "Insider's" view of Venice.
