A most amazing, educational, often humorous tour of little known excavation sites under Rome’s buildings. Philip is a master narrator, drawing the keen interest of my two teenage granddaughters. His academic credentials and knowledge of archeology and Roman times was on display throughout our 3 hour tour. Memorable!
Philip was outstanding: engaging, resourceful, entertaining and knowledgeable! So grateful of all we learned and saw. Places and things we never would have discovered on our own. The lasagna of history of underground Rome is amazing.
I was one of a group of 5. I was at the meeting place an hour early (9:00 am). The other four were a family who showed up 30 minutes late (they called Context to report they’d be “only” 10 minutes late). The tour ended at 1 pm so it was 2.5 hours in duration, not the advertised 3. The tour was excellent from an information standpoint, due entirely to Philip’s wealth of knowledge. He was an excellent guide: professional, knowledgeable, and fun. I was disappointed that the other family’s tardiness greatly reduced MY tour time AND they didn’t tip Phillip, though he cheerfully accommodated their tardiness. I am an ITMI-trained tour director/guide and know first-hand that tour operators don’t usually adequately compensate TD’s/TG’s because it is assumed that gratuities will compensate for the shortfall. That is simply not the reality of our industry. As an aside, I have taken numerous Context Tours in Florence, Rome, and Venice and I have referred others to Context in the past. To be clear, my next statements are NOT based on today’s experience with Philip but are based on what I sense is a change in your business model. I will not recommend Context in the future nor will I take additional Context tours. I researched current Context tour options in Rome, Florence and Venice for my current vacation to Italy and found that you have priced yourselves out of the market. I don’t know if you’re under new management or ownership, but you no longer offer a product that I can support.
