Additional Trip-Planning Resources
A few things that pair well with this tour:
- A curious mindset and an eagle eye for spotting hidden symbols
- A few spare minutes to ride the carousel in Piazza della Repubblica
- A place on your phone to jot down restaurants and other destinations your expert might recommend along the way
My children are in their early to mid-teens. Is this walk appropriate for them?
Our family tours are primarily designed for children under the age of 13, and this one, in particular, is ideal for young kids. For teens, we would recommend our private Introduction To Florence: With Accademia And Michelangelo's David tour as the content can be adapted to an age-appropriate level.
Will this tour be engaging for parents as well?
Parents are encouraged to ask questions and explore along with their children. Our guides are happy to make this experience valuable for adults as well, but keep in mind that the overall focus will be geared toward children.
Do we go inside the Duomo or just see it from the outside?
All venues are seen from the exterior only on this tour.
Will there be a place to stop for a restroom if needed?
There will be time for a bathroom stop, as well as several places to rest for a quick break as you explore.
We understand that some of our valued guests may have mobility concerns, and we want to ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable experience throughout your tour. If there are any accessibility concerns that your tour guide will need to be aware of, please let our team know at the time of booking.
Is this tour wheelchair-friendly?
Florence can present some objective difficulties for visitors with reduced mobility. In the oldest part of the city, the sidewalks are narrow and the surfaces of both streets and sidewalks can be uneven.
Please contact us to further discuss booking this tour if a member of your party has mobility concerns.

The major problem is that the tour we were given was not the one we signed up for. We signed up for this one:
Florence is embedded with cherished symbols, which pop up all over town, sometimes when least expected. The town flower, the lily, can be spotted everywhere from fountains, to building facades, to flags. The family symbols of its historic clans such as the Medici's balls, the Pazzi's dolphins and the Strozzi's moons, decorate the facades of buildings. The beloved Porcellino (little pig), who stands guard at the town market, has become a veritable mascot of the city and there is no Florentine child who has not petted his golden snout at least once! During the course of this walk, the family will embark on a treasure hunt of sorts and enjoy spotting recognizable symbols throughout the city center.
Other than the Porcellino, we learned/did none of this. Instead, the guide (Liz) took us to three or four separate sites and talked (and talked and talked) about them. It wasn't until the third site that we realized that she was going in chronological order and was attempting a walk through time. The whole thing was rather a hodge-podge, and because she was telling long very complicated anecdotes about unconnected sites, my two older kids were completely lost. My youngest (age 7) never really had a chance with that sort of material in the first place.
The tour we thought we signed up for would have been perfect for us. Finding symbols on sort of a treasure hunt and learning a bit about some of the families who inspired those symbols--that would have been great for everyone. Our littlest loved spotting Romulus & Remus and the bees of the Barberini family in Rome.
We did on a couple of occasions try to press for more symbols, but Liz seemed to have a very specific walk/talk in mind. It was all very cordial. We smiled and soldiered on and thanked her at the end. But afterward everyone agreed it was a rather exhausting experience.

We had to design this one since we had seen so much, so we commandeered Liz to explain the Duomo to us. She is great -- lively and did a great job talking to our kids at their level, which is advanced but they are still 14/11. Keep her.

Valerie was a wonderful tour guide. This was our first trip to Florence and there is no question it is visually overwhelming. Valerie help us sort out what we were looking at, she engaged ou school aged children, us , and my parents. I would highly recommend her as a tour guide, and will always check Context tours first when I travel to new places. Thank you!
