Experts
Begin at the hustle and bustle of Syntagma Square, the beating heart of modern Athens. Here, your guide will draw your eye to details most visitors rush past, like the unexpected archaeological exhibition hidden in the metro station. Here, centuries of history hide in plain sight between commuters hurrying to work, a reminder of what it means to live in one of the world’s oldest capitals.
From here, pause at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, set against the steps of the Hellenic Parliament. It’s a powerful place to begin unraveling Athens’ layered story: from the city’s early kingdoms to the birth of democracy, from the Golden Age of Pericles to revolutionary movements in the 1800s, and finally from a small village to its role as the capital of modern Greece.
On the way to the Acropolis, you’ll stroll through the National Gardens, a peaceful green oasis opened in the 19th century and used during two Olympic Games, in 1896 and 2004. Then, head to the Acropolis area where Athens first took root more than 3,000 years before Christ. Crowds here can feel overwhelming, but your guide will help you orient yourself, pointing out the most important landmarks and sharing insider tips on the best paths to reach the summit. You’ll leave with a foundation that prepares you for deeper exploration, whether later in the day or on another tour. If you want to visit the Acropolis with Context, make sure to check out the Acropolis Tour or the Acropolis Tour for Kids for a more family-oriented exploration.
Once you have gained your bearings around the Acropolis area, continue towards the picturesque neighborhood of Plaka, home of the remains of the old Agora where Athenians once debated and traded, and a grand cathedral beside a tiny Byzantine-era church that once served as a library during the War of Independence.
End the tour in Monastiraki square, heart of one of the oldest neighborhoods of Athens. From this single vantage point you can take in the city’s entire history: Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern-day buildings all stand within a single glance. Standing where centuries collide, your guide will help you read this unique skyline, showing how each era left its mark and how Athenians live among all these histories today.

If there are any accessibility concerns that your tour guide will need to be aware of, please let our team know at the time of booking.
Wheelchair accessibility
Please note that this tour is not recommended for people on wheelchairs or with severe mobility issues. In the old town sidewalks are often narrow and uneven, which can make wheelchair navigation very difficult. If you have any accessibility needs, please let us know at checkout.

Can we see the change of the guard?
The Change of the Guard takes place at Syntagma Square in front of the Hellenic Parliament at the top of every hour. Your guide can certainly accommodate your interest. Please note that we may need to slightly adjust the start time of your tour to ensure you arrive in time to see it.
